What’s inside the Russian drone “Knyaz Veshchiy Oleg”: Main Directorate of Intelligence releases a 3D model

The Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (HUR), through the “Components in Weapons” section of the War & Sanctions portal, has published an interactive 3D model along with a detailed component breakdown of a Russian reconnaissance UAV referred to as “Knyaz Veshchiy Oleg.”

The drone has a wingspan of 2.8 meters and a maximum takeoff weight of 11 kg. According to specifications attributed to the Russian side, its operational range is up to 45 km, with an endurance of up to 3.5 hours. The stated maximum speed is 130 km/h, and the operational altitude reaches up to 3,000 meters.

The development and production of this UAV are attributed to the Russian “Research and Production Center ‘Ushkuynik,’” which is also reportedly involved in the creation of fiber-optic FPV drones known as “Knyaz Vandal Novgorodsky” and interceptor UAVs referred to as “Osoed.”

The platform is equipped with two cameras: a forward-facing IP camera manufactured by the Chinese company Shenzhen Zhongxi Security, and a gyrostabilized optical system designated D-80AI, also of Chinese origin. This system includes a three-axis gimbal, a wide-angle Full HD camera, and a camera with 10× optical zoom.

Additional features include night vision capability, as well as real-time automatic target detection and tracking supported by AI-based technologies.

The flight controller is based on microcontrollers from the Swiss-founded company STMicroelectronics, with manufacturing carried out in facilities located in China and Taiwan, as well as components from the Chinese company CUAV Technology. For navigation in environments with electronic warfare interference, the system uses a four-channel CRP antenna.

Propulsion is provided by two wing-mounted electric motors manufactured by the Chinese company SunnySky.

Despite its involvement in the development of weapons used in the war against Ukraine, receipt of state funding, and training of Russian military personnel, the “Research and Production Center ‘Ushkuynik’” is currently subject to sanctions only from Ukraine, the European Union, and Switzerland. Other members of the broader sanctions coalition have not yet imposed restrictions on this entity.

It is emphasized that Russia continues to develop its own weapon systems while maintaining access to foreign technologies through supply networks and intermediary procurement schemes.

Such technologies may be used not only in the war against Ukraine but also for destabilizing security situations in other regions, including through cooperation with Russia’s partners such as Iran and North Korea.
