The United Kingdom has announced that another group of Ukrainian students has successfully completed the RAF Elementary Flying Training program. The occasion was marked in the presence of Sir Rich Knighton, Chief of the Air Staff of the Royal Air Force. The training program completed by the Ukrainian cadets included elementary flight training, qualified flying instructor training, and qualified helicopter instructor training.
The United Kingdom is conducting this training in cooperation with NATO partners, reflecting a broader effort to prepare highly qualified pilots whose skills are intended to meet both current operational demands and future mission requirements.

As of April 2026, a substantial number of Ukrainian pilots had already completed intensive Elementary Flying Training and Fast Jet Lead-in courses under the supervision of instructors from the Royal Air Force. In addition, several qualified flying instructors and helicopter flying instructors successfully completed programs at the Central Flying School. A significant number of Ukrainian personnel, including both pilots and aircraft maintenance specialists, also underwent English-language training intended to improve operational effectiveness.
These efforts form part of the United Kingdom’s contribution to the Air Capability Coalition, jointly led by the United States, Denmark, and the Netherlands. The coalition is intended to support the development of a modernized Ukrainian Air Force equipped with contemporary fighter aircraft. The training initiative began three years ago, with particular emphasis placed on both general English proficiency and specialized aviation terminology required for effective crew communication and operational coordination.

The program provides the foundational stage of flight training within the Royal Air Force framework, preparing cadets for transition to advanced fighter pilot training at other instructional centers. The initial phase focuses on developing essential hand-eye coordination, precise aircraft control, and broader aviation discipline. It also familiarizes trainees with the operational demands associated with fast-jet aviation, continuing a training tradition historically linked to the preparation of Harrier pilots.
“As pilots, we share the same fighting spirit that enables us to stand up to aggression and defend everything we hold dear. From our own historical experience in the UK, we probably understand better than anyone else just how powerful a small group can be against a numerically superior enemy,” said Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sir Garv Smith. “We had our own ‘Battle of Britain,’ and yours is ongoing now, and we will help you win it.”

The United Kingdom, together with its NATO allies, continues to support Ukraine in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion. This assistance is aimed at helping Ukraine defend its sovereignty, protect its population, and contribute to long-term stability and security across the Euro-Atlantic region. The graduation of this latest group of cadets served not only as a demonstration of the progress achieved by Ukrainian trainees, but also as a reflection of the ongoing partnership and cooperation between the Royal Air Force, NATO allies, and Ukraine.
