The United Kingdom has formed a shortlist of seven defense companies that will work on developing prototype unmanned aerial vehicles for joint operations with Apache attack helicopters. According to the Ministry of Defence, the selection is being carried out under the Project NYX program, which is now gradually moving into a practical phase.

The project aims to create so-called “loyal wingman drones” – unmanned systems designed to operate alongside Apache helicopters during future combat missions. These drones are expected to perform a wide range of tasks in complex environments, including intelligence, surveillance, target detection, strike support, and electronic warfare.

The Ministry of Defence explains that Project NYX is intended to reshape the approach to integrating unmanned aerial systems into frontline aviation. The core concept is a shift from rigid remote control to a model of “command, not control.” This means the drones will be able to use elements of AI to adapt to battlefield conditions within predefined mission parameters. Such an approach is expected to reduce risks to aircrews while simultaneously increasing the range, tempo, and flexibility of operations.

The program also aligns with the priorities outlined in the UK’s Strategic Defence Review, which emphasizes autonomy, mass, and new ways of conducting warfare. Unmanned systems are expected not to replace, but to complement traditional platforms such as attack helicopters, armored vehicles, and artillery.

Manned-Unmanned Teaming

Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard emphasized that Project NYX symbolizes a shift in how the British Army is preparing for future conflicts.

“These drones will make the British Army more effective and more lethal by increasing our ability to strike, survive, and win on the battlefield,” he said. “Project NYX represents a cutting-edge strand of our defence industrial strategy, through which we are working with leading British industrial partners to ensure the UK takes a leading position in autonomous military technologies.”

Companies invited to take part in the next phase of the program include Anduril, BAE Systems, Leonardo, Lockheed Martin UK, Syos, Tekever, and Thales. The selection followed a pre-qualification stage that was completed at the end of 2025.

In March 2026, the number of participants is expected to be reduced to four companies. These firms will receive contracts for research and development work to build concept demonstrators. Initial operational capability of the system is currently planned for 2030.

The Ministry of Defence notes that Project NYX is intended to accelerate cooperation with industry and the development of autonomous air systems capable of operating alongside crewed combat aircraft in high-threat environments.
