Montreal-based defense contractor Top Aces is reinforcing its position as a leader in advanced air training by announcing plans to upgrade its fleet of F-16 aircraft. As the world’s only commercial operator of these fighter jets, the company is currently exploring additional opportunities to enhance the performance and efficiency of its training environment.

The F-16s operated by Top Aces are equipped with cutting-edge technologies that distinguish them in the training space. These include an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, helmet-mounted targeting systems, Link 16 communication systems, long-range missiles, and advanced electronic countermeasures. With these capabilities, the company can provide a realistic and complex training environment for U.S. pilots and their allies, crucial for modern air combat scenarios.

Top Aces President Russ Quinn stated that the company is considering the addition of advanced capabilities such as commercial electronic attack and jamming systems, the integration of long-range infrared missiles, and AI-powered guided assistants. “These innovations are aimed at providing even more reliable training scenarios for pilots preparing for air combat,” he remarked.

In September 2022, Top Aces was selected under the U.S. Air Force’s Combat Air Force Contracted Air Support program, through which the company is set to provide advanced air training for pilots at key facilities such as the Eglin Air Force Base in Florida and Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.

This contract is expected to significantly enhance the effectiveness of combat pilot training, preparing them for the complexities of modern warfare. “We have a highly skilled team of F-16 maintenance personnel and pilots, which gives us a unique ability to meet the growing demand for F-16 operation training,” added Russ Quinn. The anticipated system upgrades aim to improve the training process, ensuring that pilots are well-prepared for the challenges they will face in real combat situations.

Top Aces recently announced the integration of an advanced infrared search and tracking system (IRST) on its F-16 Advanced Aggressor Fighter (AAF) platform. This sophisticated technology measures infrared radiation to detect, track, and identify targets. It features the state-of-the-art SkyWard scanning sensor from Leonardo, which offers a wide scanning range for early detection and engagement of targets beyond visual range.

“This industry-first air adversary training capability reflects our commitment to providing the U.S. Air Force with high-tech adversaries,” said Russ Quinn. “We believe that our F-16 AAF platform, combined with our experienced personnel, offers the most realistic and cost-effective training solution.”
