New footage has been released that appears to show a Chinese Chengdu J-20 fighter flying near a Taiwanese air base during military exercises. According to reports, the incident occurred as part of the operation referred to as “Justice Mission 2025” and has prompted discussion about whether the aircraft was able to approach the area without being detected.

A defense analyst stated that the J-20 flew within visual range of Taiwan’s coastline but was not detected by local forces. According to information attributed to the People’s Liberation Army of China, the fighter passed near Pingtung Air Base in the southern part of the island. Reports indicate that the incident occurred on Tuesday, December 30, the second day of the exercises. The information has not yet been independently verified, including whether the aircraft entered Taiwanese airspace.
If confirmed, the event would raise concerns for Taiwan’s defense authorities, as it could indicate potential gaps in air defense coverage. Although no weapons were employed and no casualties were reported, the situation would likely prompt a detailed review to assess system performance and identify any possible areas of limited detection.

Particular attention is being paid to Pingtung Air Base, which is a key facility for training and sortie operations of the Taiwanese Air Force. Any employment of stealth aircraft in this area would reduce reaction time in the event of a real crisis and therefore carries strategic significance.
Taiwanese authorities have not commented on the incident so far, possibly to avoid providing China with an advantage in the public information domain. Regardless of the accuracy of the reports, the episode illustrates the People’s Liberation Army’s ability to approach Taiwan while conducting exercises under realistic conditions, potentially adding uncertainty to local defense planning.
