A segment of a private, innovation-driven air defense system is already operational in Ukraine. The system is based on remotely controlled machine-gun turrets. Journalists were shown a demonstration of how the system is operated, including the control workflow and its behavior in a practical setting. At the same time, the public reaction on social media has been mixed, with many users questioning the appropriateness of publicly showcasing such developments.
The system consists of privately developed remote-controlled turrets equipped with M2 machine guns, reportedly capable of engaging targets at distances of up to 2 km. According to Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov, an advisor to the Minister of Defense, the primary intended role of these systems is the protection of critical infrastructure. It is also stated that such solutions could be used by private entities, which may order air defense services from commercial providers.
This case illustrates that private-sector air defense solutions are already being implemented in practice, and similar approaches may be adopted by other companies.

According to Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov, an advisor to the Minister of Defense, the emergence of this type of project ahead of comparable state-led initiatives is attributed to the fact that private companies typically operate faster, as they are not constrained by complex approval procedures and bureaucratic processes.
At the end of March, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated that the government’s experimental initiative aimed at involving the private sector in air defense had moved into a practical implementation phase and was already showing initial results. One of the participating companies has reportedly formed its own air defense unit, which has already recorded several successful engagements, including the downing of drones such as Shahed and Zala.

At the same time, the formation of additional air defense units is ongoing at 13 enterprises that have received the status of authorized business entities from the Ministry of Defense. Some of these groups are already performing operational tasks, while others are undergoing training, and the remainder are still in the preparatory phase. These private units are integrated into the unified command-and-control system of the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and operate within its framework. Their assigned tasks include the protection of critical infrastructure and the interception of UAVs, including Shahed-type drones.

A cooperation model is being developed in which the state, military structures, and private sector operate as a unified system. The stated objective is the creation of a multi-layered air defense network designed to provide broader territorial coverage and improve the interception of airborne threats. Airspace defense remains one of the key priorities within this framework.
