MBDA has announced advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) for its Orchestrike collaborative weapon system over the past year and plans to integrate this AI into the SPEAR cruise missile family. According to company representatives at the Farnborough Airshow, the new AI capabilities are designed to enhance coordination between the missiles and the pilot controlling them, aiming to improve overall mission effectiveness.

It is claimed that Orchestrike will enhance the performance of SPEAR missiles through AI-based coordination and collaboration. According to the company, this will enable the missiles to dynamically respond to threats and work in conjunction with the pilot, potentially increasing the survivability of both the missile and the platform. The company assures that the system will operate within parameters set by human operators while adhering to legal and ethical standards.

MBDA reports that since its presentation at the Paris Air Show in 2023, the Orchestrike system has rapidly advanced from concept to near-operational capability over the past twelve months. Key areas of development included refining AI algorithms and improving data transmission channels between missiles. The company believes this demonstrates their ability to innovate and rapidly implement new capabilities.

The Orchestrike system is being showcased at MBDA’s stand during the Farnborough International Airshow. According to the company, the digital twin simulator will allow military personnel to experience a simulated raid where missiles react in real time and collaboratively to tactical situations, illustrating the capabilities of artificial intelligence.
