Ukraine and Poland have signed a memorandum to establish a Joint Working Group on Unmanned Aerial Systems. The announcement was made during a press conference featuring Ukraine’s Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal and Poland’s Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.

“We are taking our security cooperation to a new level in response to Russian aggression, which threatens Ukraine and other European countries. Joint training programs will be a central focus of this working group,” emphasized Denys Shmyhal.

According to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, the group will include military specialists from both countries. It will serve as a platform for coordinating efforts, sharing expertise, and developing joint projects. Shmyhal emphasized that particular attention will be given to integrating advanced defense technologies and launching initiatives aimed at strengthening the protection of civilians and critical infrastructure.

A key focus of the group will be joint military training programs. Shmyhal expressed confidence that such exercises will significantly enhance both countries’ ability to effectively counter a common adversary.

Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also announced plans to sign an agreement focused on training and improving practical skills in drone operations. He noted that discussions will concentrate on establishing joint industrial programs. According to him, the Polish side sees this as the next step in cooperation following significant efforts aimed at supporting the civilian population.

Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also emphasized that the experience gained by the Ukrainian military on the battlefield could serve as a foundation for transforming not only the Polish Armed Forces but the entire NATO defense system. He highlighted Ukraine’s open and constructive willingness to partner.

During the meeting, the ministers also signed a Joint Declaration to strengthen security and defense cooperation. The document outlines an agreement to deepen collaboration in key areas, including initiatives such as SAFE and PURL.

It’s worth noting that, recently, Russian drones violated Polish airspace, with over 15 unmanned aerial vehicles detected – many of them coming from Belarus. Warsaw described the incident as an “unprecedented violation of Polish sovereignty” and a direct threat to the safety of its citizens. European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas stated that the Russian drone incursions into European airspace were deliberate, not accidental.
