The flagship Airbus A380 operated by Emirates – long regarded as one of the most recognizable aircraft in aviation history – is being upgraded to a new level of onboard connectivity. Installation of next-generation Starlink internet has been completed on the aircraft, aiming to improve in-flight connectivity for passengers across all travel classes during long-haul routes.
The Emirates A380 was among the first commercial aircraft to offer passenger internet access. Early onboard systems provided throughput of less than 1 Mbps. The integration of three Starlink antennas per A380 aircraft is intended to significantly increase available bandwidth and improve Wi-Fi performance, enabling more stable connectivity even at cruising altitudes of around 12,000 meters.

The first Emirates A380 aircraft returned to Dubai this week after the installation of the Starlink system and certification testing in Newquay, United Kingdom. To accelerate passenger access to high-speed connectivity, the airline has begun a faster rollout of the system across its remaining A380 fleet. The service will be available free of charge to all passengers, regardless of travel class, following a simple registration process. Starlink is also expected to enable real-time television streaming onboard.
The Airbus A380 is the world’s largest passenger aircraft, which presents both operational constraints and integration opportunities for onboard connectivity systems. A customized version of Starlink has been adapted specifically for the aircraft’s double-deck configuration and high passenger density. According to the implementation details, the system is designed to deliver an aggregate throughput of over 2 Gbps across the cabin.

Unlike the Emirates Boeing 777 fleet, the A380 aircraft are equipped with additional Wi-Fi access points and a third antenna, which is intended to improve connection stability even under full passenger load. The optimized integration between the upper and lower decks is designed to support continuous high-speed internet access throughout the cabin.
Installation of Starlink systems is expected to scale up soon at Emirates Engineering hangars in Dubai, enabling faster deployment across the airline’s wider fleet. The company states it aims to deliver consistent connectivity across all aircraft within a short timeframe. At present, Starlink has been installed on 25 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, with the first Airbus A380 now added to the rollout. According to the airline, more than 650,000 passengers have already used Starlink-enabled internet during Emirates flights.

Emirates continues to invest in service improvements and enhancements to the passenger experience. The integration of Starlink on the A380 is part of a long-term fleet modernization strategy, which is described as one of the largest in aviation history. To date, 93 Emirates aircraft have undergone comprehensive refurbishment. The program includes the introduction of Premium Economy, upgrades to Business Class, refurbishment of First Class suites, updates to Economy Class interiors, and expansion of the in-flight entertainment system.

In parallel, Emirates is also expanding its training programs and supporting infrastructure. In mid-2025, the airline opened the Centre of Hospitality Excellence, an $8 million training facility designed for approximately 25,000 cabin crew members. The center focuses on developing passenger service skills and standardizing service quality across the airline’s operations.
