A video has been released in Ukraine showing the interception and destruction of Russian kamikaze drones using a light aircraft, the Yak-52, over the Odesa region. Online discussions highlight not only the effectiveness of such actions but also the exceptionally high level of risk faced by crews performing these missions.

The footage was published by the press service of the 11th Separate Army Aviation Brigade “Kherson.” In a statement shared on the brigade’s Facebook page, it notes that while hostile UAVs are heading toward Ukrainian cities, crews are already airborne to intercept them. The message emphasizes that these missions are carried out without advanced equipment, highlighting instead factors such as discipline, coordination, and commitment to protecting civilians.

The video shows Ukrainian pilots operating Yak-52 aircraft on combat sorties aimed at intercepting and neutralizing Russian strike and reconnaissance drones in the airspace over the Odesa region, including areas above the Black Sea. The recording includes direct interception sequences.

It is noted that light aviation continues to be used as part of broader efforts to counter aerial threats, particularly given the extensive use of kamikaze drones. At the same time, this approach is described as a supplementary and situational measure within the overall air defense system rather than a primary solution.

Military and political analyst Oleksandr Kovalenko of the “Information Resistance” group noted that such operations involve an exceptionally high level of risk. According to him, engagement with hostile unmanned aerial vehicles occurs at very short distances, creating a significant threat to the crew’s safety. Under these conditions, each sortie effectively becomes a mission with minimal safety margin.

Recently, the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported a notable development: operators of a naval drone division within the 412th Nemesis Brigade carried out what is described as the first recorded interception of a “Shahed”-type drone using an interceptor drone launched from an unmanned surface platform.

“This represents a new level of integration between maritime and aerial unmanned capabilities,” the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated. “The use of surface platforms to deploy interceptor drones expands the capacity to counter aerial threats and creates an additional layer of protection for Ukrainian cities.”
