Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces reported that their deep-strike attack drone has, for the first time, shot down a Russian Mi-8 helicopter in mid-air. According to the unit’s Telegram update, the operation was the result of unconventional planning and a high level of technical proficiency: each mission of this type requires precise equipment calibration, careful preparation, and skilled operators.

The Special Operations Forces also hinted that the circumstances of the strike have left the Russian side with more questions than answers. Only the crew of the downed Mi-8 knew exactly what happened – and they are no longer able to provide any explanations.

The Mi-8 is one of the most widely used multipurpose helicopters in the Russian military. It is employed for troop transport, evacuation, reconnaissance, and fire support. The aircraft is powered by two TV2-117 or TV3-117 turboshaft engines, each producing roughly 2,000 horsepower. Its maximum speed reaches about 250 km/h, and it can lift up to 4 tonnes of cargo on an external sling.

In its combat configurations, the helicopter can be equipped with rocket pods, machine-gun armament, and electronic countermeasure systems. This makes the successful engagement of a Mi-8 in mid-air by an attack drone both operationally significant and symbolically notable. It highlights a shift in the balance between the enemy’s airborne mobility and the extended-range capabilities of Ukrainian unmanned systems.
