A Ukrainian drone has successfully targeted a Russian Strela-10 surface-to-air missile system in Russia’s Kursk region. The strike was reported by Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces via their official Facebook page. The Strela-10 is a short-range air defense system capable of engaging targets at distances of up to 5 kilometers.

According to a statement from the Command of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, operators from the RAID 413 unit, working in coordination with the “Dzhmil” drone detachment of the 78th Separate Air Assault Regiment, successfully struck a Strela-10 missile system in the Kursk region.

The report states that Ukrainian drone operators carried out a targeted strike on the Strela-10 system. In an attempt to take down the reconnaissance drone, Russian forces deployed the air defense system into an open area and launched two missiles. Both failed to hit their target – thanks in part to the skill of the Ukrainian pilots, who managed to evade the attacks. As the interception attempt failed, Russian troops tried to withdraw the system to safety, but were unsuccessful. The Ukrainian drone struck the target directly, causing significant damage to the air defense system.

The Strela-10 is a Soviet-era short-range surface-to-air missile system that entered service in 1976. Designed for visual tracking and engagement of low-altitude aerial targets, each vehicle typically carries up to eight guided missiles, with individual missile weights ranging from 40 to 42 kilograms, depending on the system variant. A standard crew includes three personnel: a commander, a driver, and a gunner.

In a separate incident reported last week, drone operators from Ukraine’s 412th Independent UAV Regiment Nemesis, working alongside other units of the Defense Forces, successfully targeted a Buk-M3 missile launcher in the Luhansk region. Reconnaissance drones initially detected activity from the Russian air defense system. After tracking the launcher’s movements to a concealed position within a wooded area, they pinpointed its exact location. The coordinates were then relayed to another Defense Forces unit, which carried out a precise strike against the air defense platform.
