On November 12, 2024, JSW Defence Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of the Indian conglomerate JSW Group, and Shield AI, Inc., a U.S.-based defense technology company, announced a strategic agreement to localize and manufacture the V-BAT drone, a Group 3 Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), in India. This collaboration represents a significant step in bolstering India’s defense capabilities by integrating advanced drone technologies into the country’s industrial ecosystem.

V-BAT

The V-BAT, developed by Shield AI, is a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) UAV designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Its compact design enables deployment by a two-person team, with assembly and launch completed in under 20 minutes. Powered by a ducted fan propulsion system, the V-BAT enhances thrust efficiency and provides greater stability in challenging weather conditions. The drone features a 2.95-meter wingspan, a length of 2.7 meters, and a maximum takeoff weight of 57 kg, which includes an 11.3-kg payload. It offers up to 10 hours of endurance and can operate at altitudes of up to 6,100 meters above sea level. The V-BAT is compatible with a range of payloads, including electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) cameras and wide-area search sensors, making it suitable for tasks such as border security, counter-narcotics operations, and threat detection.

Although the V-BAT is primarily designed for reconnaissance missions, its payload capacity allows for armament to meet specific operational requirements. It has already been integrated into operations by the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy, where its minimal logistical footprint and adaptability have proven advantageous. India’s armed forces are also expected to adopt the V-BAT as part of the new partnership, which focuses on localizing production and expanding the country’s technological base. This collaboration aligns with India’s strategic goal of strengthening its defense capabilities through indigenous manufacturing and advanced UAV technology deployment.

According to the agreement, JSW Group plans to invest approximately $90 million over two years, with $65 million allocated in the first year for program compliance development, establishing manufacturing facilities to support proper technology licensing, and workforce training. This initiative aims to create a local supply chain and advanced infrastructure for assembling and testing V-BAT systems in India. The production will not only address the needs of the Indian armed forces but also position India as a global manufacturing hub for Shield AI’s technologies.

The V-BAT is a compact, tactical platform designed to provide advanced reconnaissance capabilities. It is already in service with armed forces worldwide, including U.S. Marine Corps Expeditionary Units (MEU), and is well-suited for deployment in challenging and high-pressure environments. Its distinctive ducted design reduces logistical demands and allows for rapid deployment, making it a practical choice for special forces, infantry, armored, and artillery units.

This partnership aligns with the broader goal of strengthening India’s defense technology ecosystem. JSW Defence emphasized its focus on integrating critical technologies for the Indian Armed Forces, enabling large-scale local production of V-BAT drones, training operators, and providing comprehensive maintenance services. Shield AI highlighted the collaborative efforts between India and the United States to develop an integrated defense supply chain, presenting the agreement as a significant step toward enhancing India’s capabilities in military unmanned systems.

This collaboration highlights the strategic defense ties between India and the United States, leveraging India’s engineering and manufacturing expertise. Shield AI noted that the V-BAT drone offers a cost-effective solution in a market increasingly focused on autonomous systems with reduced operating costs. The partnership is expected to support local production of unmanned aerial systems while expanding global distribution and operational activities.
