On Tuesday, June 18, 2024, a Royal Air Force (RAF) Reaper drone successfully carried out an airstrike in the Syrian desert, targeting a known Daesh terrorist. The details of the strike were released yesterday by the British Ministry of Defence. This operation is part of the UK’s ongoing involvement in international efforts to prevent the resurgence of the terrorist organization in both Syria and Iraq.

The remotely piloted Reaper drone, armed with Hellfire missiles, tracked an individual on foot in a remote area. According to the Ministry of Defence, after ensuring that no civilians were nearby, the crew executed a precise strike, eliminating the target. The Ministry stated, “Having confirmed that there were no civilians in the vicinity who could be put at risk, the Reaper crew successfully struck the individual.”

The Hellfire missile used in this operation is an air-to-ground missile with laser guidance, designed for precise targeting. Initially developed for anti-tank purposes, it has become indispensable in counter-terrorism missions due to its accuracy, making it ideal for striking individuals or small groups while minimizing the risk of collateral damage.

This mission is part of Operation Shader, the UK’s long-standing involvement in the global coalition against ISIS, which began in 2014. Under Operation Shader, RAF aircraft have been deployed in Iraq and Syria to conduct numerous airstrikes, surveillance operations, and provide support to local forces in the fight against ISIS.
