On the night of June 27–28, 2025, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) carried out a successful special operation, targeting the Russian military airfield “Kirovske” in Russian-occupied Crimea with drones. As a result of the strike, three Russian helicopters – a Mi-8, Mi-26, and Mi-28 – were destroyed, along with a Pantsir-S1 self-propelled anti-aircraft missile and gun system.

The SBU reported that the drone strike targeted the deployment areas of aviation units, air defense systems, ammunition depots, as well as Russian reconnaissance and strike drones. Secondary explosions were observed throughout the night at the Kirovske airfield, indicating substantial damage to both infrastructure and equipment.

This operation is part of Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to increase pressure on Russian occupying forces in Crimea and southern Ukraine. The destruction of strategic assets such as the Pantsir-S1 significantly undermines the enemy’s air defense and strike capabilities. The estimated value of the destroyed equipment amounts to tens of millions of U.S. dollars. The attack highlights the growing effectiveness and precision of Ukrainian drone systems in conducting operations within occupied territory.

The SBU has now reported the destruction of Russian aircraft at their bases for the second day in a row. On June 27, the agency announced that its operatives, in coordination with Special Operations Forces, carried out a strike on the Marinovka airfield in Russia’s Volgograd region, destroying two Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers. According to the SBU, two additional aircraft were damaged in the attack. The service noted that the Russian military actively uses these aircraft to conduct bombing runs along the front line, including the delivery of guided aerial bombs.
