Ukrainian Forces Shoot Down Russian Mi-8 Helicopter with FPV Drone

Ukrainian activist and volunteer Serhiy Sternenko has released new footage showing another successful strike on a Russian helicopter using a first-person view (FPV) drone. The attack, carried out by fighters from the M2 Special Operations Center of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in the Kursk region, targeted a Russian Mi-8 helicopter.

The video captures the moment when the drone hit the tail section of the Mi-8 with a powerful fragmentation warhead. The exact fate of the helicopter remains unclear, but Sternenko noted that it has “ceased operations in the specified area.”

This strike came after Ukrainian forces previously managed to damage a Mi-28 helicopter using a similar tactic. In that instance, the drone also struck the tail of the helicopter, leading to an emergency landing. The crew reportedly survived.

The use of FPV drones in these operations highlights the evolving tactics in the conflict, with Ukrainian forces increasingly relying on unmanned systems to target Russian military assets. These drones, equipped with fragmentation and high-explosive munitions, have proven effective in targeting and disabling Russian helicopters, particularly in regions close to the front line.

The success of these operations not only demonstrates the adaptability of the Ukrainian armed forces but also underscores the growing importance of drone warfare in modern conflicts.
