For the first time, the U.S. Air Force deployed stealthy B-2 Spirit strategic bombers to carry out airstrikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen. According to a U.S. Department of Defense press release, the American military conducted precision airstrikes on five underground weapon depots located in areas under Houthi control. These facilities reportedly stored various weapon components that the Houthis used in attacks on civilian and military vessels in the Red Sea, the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden.

This marked the first operational use of the B-2 Spirit bomber in the ongoing conflict in Yemen. The strategic bomber is renowned for its stealth capabilities and can target even fortified underground sites. The Houthi weapon storage facilities were designed to be impervious to conventional strikes, but the U.S. Air Force specifically selected them to demonstrate the American military’s ability to eliminate even deeply concealed targets.

It remains unknown where the bombers were launched from – whether from their “home” base at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, which is more likely, or from one of the operational B-2 bases around the world. The type of weapon used by the B-2 also remains unclear. However, it is known that this aircraft is the only one in the U.S. Air Force capable of deploying 14-ton GPS-guided GBU-57 bunker-busting bombs, which are said to be able to penetrate 200 feet of concrete before detonating.

There is also a possibility that the B-2s might have used the GBU-72 Advanced 5K Penetrator, a precision-guided bomb designed to strike deeply buried and well-fortified targets. The B-2 mission would have remained unnoticed if it hadn’t been revealed by aviation enthusiasts on social media using flight-tracking apps or radio signal monitoring.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III emphasized the significance of this operation. “The use of stealth bombers like the B-2 Spirit demonstrates the United States’ ability to strike these targets whenever necessary, at any time and in any place,” he stated. This strike sends a strong message to adversaries and showcases the U.S.’s commitment to neutralizing threats to international security and ensuring free maritime navigation.

For over a year, Iran-backed Houthis have been engaging in destabilizing activities in the region, including attacks on international shipping lanes and U.S. vessels. The airstrikes aim to weaken the rebels’ ability to continue such assaults. The decision to authorize the strikes was made in response to the Houthis’ continuous provocations and blatant disregard for international law. The U.S. government has made it clear that further destabilizing actions by the Houthis will have consequences.

The use of B-2 Spirit bombers in this mission highlights the evolving nature of U.S. military strategy in Yemen and the critical role of advanced technologies in modern warfare. Additionally, the airstrike sends a clear message to Iran amidst growing regional tensions.

“Once again, the United States will not hesitate to take action to protect American lives and assets, deter attacks on civilians and our regional partners, and safeguard the freedom of navigation, enhancing security on these waterways for American, coalition, and commercial vessels,” stated Lloyd J. Austin III. “We will continue to make it clear to the Houthis that their unlawful and reckless attacks will have consequences. I am grateful for the professionalism and skill of the brave American service members who participated in today’s operations and continue to stand guard in defense of our country.”
