IronNet and Asterion Systems Test High-Speed Interceptor Drone HitchHiker in Ukraine

American companies IronNet and Asterion Systems have teamed up to test the unique interceptor drone, HitchHiker, in Ukraine. The companies collaborated to assess the effectiveness of drone countermeasures in real combat conditions, with the tests conducted along the front lines in Ukraine.

IronNet is a cybersecurity company utilizing artificial intelligence (AI), while Asterion Systems specializes in developing counter-drone technologies. Both companies believe that the HitchHiker interceptor could prove effective against kamikaze drones, such as the Iranian Shahed, while also being more cost-effective to operate than air defense systems like the Patriot.

The HitchHiker interceptor drone operates using the Iron Dome tool, which detects cyber threats in real-time. This versatile border interceptor has a range of up to 200 km and can reach a maximum speed of 450 km/h. It is launched by the Asterion Perimaster C4 system, which integrates long-range sensor data to position the HitchHiker directly behind incoming suspicious targets. This setup allows for visual inspection and either neutralization of the threat or a return to base.

Data is aggregated from multiple sensors to provide users with situational awareness, monitor objects along the entire border through a secure network environment, and detect suspicious drones before they reach the border. The drones can be automatically launched from stationary or mobile platforms, enhancing operational flexibility. The integration of cybersecurity into the drone defense system expands its capabilities, and the partnership with Asterion has made the counter-drone system more effective. However, even after the trials, no decision has been made yet on whether the Ukrainian military will adopt this interceptor.

At the recent Bahrain International Airshow, a partnership between IronNet and Asterion was announced. The collaboration aims to address the growing demand for comprehensive and integrated defense strategies. They plan to utilize artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced sensor networks to analyze patterns and anomalies across a wide range of data sources. The companies stated that the outcome will be a more reliable and proactive defense system capable of detecting and mitigating threats before they can cause significant damage.

“Together, we are creating a solution that addresses the multidimensional threats our clients face today, including those originating from land, air, and space sources,” said Andreas Mustert, founder and CTO of Asterion.
