A recently published photograph of one of the F-16 fighter jets supplied to Ukraine has sparked intense discussions among military analysts and observers.
The image, circulating on social media, appears to show the aircraft returning from a combat mission. Supporting this theory is the absence of one AIM-120 AMRAAM missile from its wing and the presence of external fuel tanks, which are typically used to extend flight range.
Analysts examining the image in detail—almost under a microscope—suggest that the aircraft was likely on an operational sortie. It may have been intercepting aerial threats or carrying out air superiority missions. According to the Telegram channel “Sonyashnyk,” where the photo first appeared, the F-16 might have been tasked with “covering a strike group,” meaning it was providing protection against airborne threats.
The well-known intelligence resource OSINTtechnical, which relies on open-source data, pointed out that the F-16 in the image appears to be equipped with more advanced and long-range AMRAAM missiles of the C-series, rather than older models. It is noted that this upgraded variant can significantly enhance the fighter’s effectiveness in engaging enemy aircraft, drones, and in beyond-visual-range combat.
The F-16 is a multirole fourth-generation fighter jet provided to Ukraine by Western partners, serving as a crucial addition to both offensive capabilities and air defense. Recently, we reported that a Ukrainian F-16 pilot set a record during a large-scale Russian missile attack—destroying six cruise missiles in a single mission. Notably, two of them were shot down using the aircraft’s cannon.
Western partners have not only supplied several of these aircraft but have also taken on intensive pilot training and logistical support. In a recent interview with ArmiyaInform, NATO Military Committee Chairman Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone stated that these fighters have significantly enhanced Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian missiles and carry out effective strikes on military targets.
Notably, Ukraine’s fighter fleet is gradually expanding. Recently, the first Mirage-2000 jets, provided by France, arrived in the country. These aircraft were modernized before delivery, equipped with air-to-ground combat capabilities and enhanced electronic warfare systems. [Learn more about them here.]
