The 350th Electronic Warfare Wing is enhancing the electronic warfare (EW) capabilities of the F-16 fighter jets being delivered to Ukraine. This process is being overseen by the 68th Electronic Warfare Squadron in collaboration with Danish and Norwegian partners, according to a statement by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

The 68th Electronic Warfare Squadron is focused on increasing the lethality and survivability of U.S. and allied forces. During the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, both Ukrainian and Russian forces heavily rely on EW capabilities, using jamming and spoofing to gain an advantage in the operational environment.

Along with the recent transfer of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine from Denmark and Norway, the 68th Electronic Warfare Squadron faced the urgent task of reprogramming the EW subsystems installed on these aircraft. This challenge, as noted by the U.S. Air Force, was complicated by the fact that the system used on these jets is not currently part of the U.S. arsenal.

“Most reprogramming centers would have said ‘no way’ if faced with such a challenge: this is uncharted territory… But if not us, then who?” stated a representative of the 68th Electronic Warfare Squadron. “We are the best people for this.”

The squadron assembled a team of experienced experts and engineers to tackle the challenge. Relying on data provided by their partners in Denmark and Norway, they adapted their processes to meet the requirements for effective reprogramming. As part of a unique approach, team members were sent to a partner nation’s laboratory to work directly with coalition members on the development and testing of electronic warfare systems. The head of the 68th Electronic Warfare Squadron stated that the team was able to master the system in just two weeks, calling it “unprecedented, a testament to the talented individuals in the squadron and the wing.”

Thanks to the teamwork of the 68th Electronic Warfare Squadron, all critical modifications needed for the Ukrainian F-16s were successfully tested and validated. They also managed to improve reprogramming processes for all involved parties. One of the leading equipment specialists emphasized that without the collective effort, this would not have been possible.

Incorporating Ukraine into the list of countries to which the 68th Squadron will supply equipment will ensure continuous reprogramming based on feedback from the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
