Ukrainian Navy Receives New Magura V5 Vessels Equipped with Strike FPV Drones

The Ukrainian Navy has officially received a new fleet of autonomous Magura V5 naval vessels, equipped with strike-capable FPV drones. This enhanced modification significantly bolsters the offensive capabilities of Ukraine’s maritime drones. The new vessels were publicly showcased on December 7, 2024, in a video shared by the Ukrainian Navy on Facebook.

The first public demonstration of the upgraded Magura V5 system took place during an attack on Russian-controlled gas platforms in the Black Sea. The Ukrainian Navy employed not only conventional strike maritime drones but also integrated FPV drones launched from carriers. These drones are equipped with airburst systems designed to target sensitive “soft” assets, such as radar installations and electronic warfare systems.

The footage also shows FPV drones engaging directly with Russian forces stationed on the platforms. This marks a significant advancement in the integration of unmanned systems, enabling Ukraine to carry out more precise and diverse strikes on enemy positions.

The drone carriers, modified to house and deploy FPV drones, display potential changes in the ship’s hull geometry. Although the video quality doesn’t provide a clear view of the specific modifications, it’s likely that the drones are stored inside the carrier and deployed through a hatch when necessary.

Earlier, in June 2024, Ukraine introduced its latest naval drone, the Stalker 5.0, at the Black Sea Security Forum in Odesa. This 5-meter-long autonomous boat is designed for defense missions and supply operations. It can deliver water, food, military equipment, and other supplies to coastal areas and islands. Additionally, it serves for reconnaissance and patrolling of maritime and river border areas.
