The British defense technology company Helsing has introduced the HX-2, an autonomous drone powered by artificial intelligence. According to the company, the drone is designed to strike a balance between affordability, operational precision, and scalability. The unveiling was attended by the Secretary of State for Defence, John Healey.
The HX-2 is positioned as a scalable solution tailored to meet modern defense requirements. Helsing describes the drone as a significant advancement in autonomous systems. Designed for rapid deployment and precise targeting, it incorporates lessons learned from recent conflicts, including the war in Ukraine, where speed, adaptability, and cost-effectiveness have proven to be critical factors.
The UK Secretary of State for Defence, John Healey, emphasized the importance of technological innovation in strengthening the country’s defense capabilities. He stated:
“The war in Ukraine has shown that a nation’s armed forces are only as strong as the industry and innovations supporting them. Industrial production not only sustains quality jobs and economic growth but can also shape the outcomes of conflicts and enhance the effectiveness of our deterrence.”
He commended Helsing’s planned investment of £350 million over the next five years, aimed at establishing a high-efficiency production facility in the UK for manufacturing the HX-2 and similar systems. He added:
“It is encouraging to see Helsing taking the lead by establishing its factories of the future here in the UK to mass-produce tens of thousands of cost-effective yet high-performance AI-driven systems. Such private sector investments will create new jobs, drive economic growth, and enhance technological leadership and industrial resilience.”
Helsing’s Managing Director, Amelia Gould, highlighted that the HX-2 reflects shifting priorities in defense technology.
“Our armed forces deserve cutting-edge technologies that can be deployed at the fastest possible pace. Ukraine has demonstrated that defense technologies can combine precision and speed with scalability and affordability. Achieving this requires investment in a new manufacturing framework.”
The development and integration of the HX-2 drones is part of a broader strategy by the Ministry of Defence aimed at strengthening sovereign defense manufacturing capabilities. This strategy emphasizes resilience, the creation of local jobs, and ensuring that the UK remains at the forefront of defense innovation.
The defense industrial strategy, introduced alongside the HX-2, seeks to transform how the UK produces and deploys defense equipment. The Ministry of Defence is focusing on leveraging public-private partnerships to enhance technological capabilities and support industrial resilience amid increasing global instability.
The drone, capable of delivering precise strikes and rapid deployment, is expected to contribute to both national security and the growing defense export market of the UK. More details about Helsing’s investments and the HX-2 drones will be revealed in the coming weeks. The company will also soon share plans regarding its production capabilities in the UK.
