Meteor Missiles to Be Integrated into South Korean KF-2 Fighter Jets

South Korea has reached an important milestone by integrating the MBDA Meteor air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) into its next-generation KF-21 Boramae fighter jet. This collaboration between South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), and MBDA highlights international cooperation and advanced engineering expertise. The Meteor missile, known for its unique air-breathing propulsion system, offers unprecedented range and performance.

Unlike traditional air-to-air missiles, which lose maneuverability once their engines shut down during flight, the Meteor retains its speed and maneuverability all the way to the target. This makes it a formidable addition to the KF-21’s capabilities.

The Meteor missile is considered one of the most advanced air-to-air missile systems, capable of reaching speeds exceeding Mach 4 and engaging targets at ranges of up to 200 km. As a next-generation Beyond Visual Range (BVRAAM) air-to-air missile, the Meteor is designed to transform aerial combat in the 21st century, effectively countering both current and emerging threats. The missile’s sophisticated active radar homing system allows it to engage a wide range of targets in any weather conditions, from fast jet aircraft to small drones and cruise missiles. Its robust design ensures reliable performance even in heavily contested environments with advanced countermeasures.

The integration process—an extremely complex task involving aerodynamics, radar, and software engineering—began with the first flight of the KF-21 in July 2022, when the aircraft was equipped with four Meteor missiles, an unprecedented achievement.

In 2023, catapult testing was conducted, followed by successful live-fire tests in early 2024, demonstrating the weapon’s effectiveness. Production contracts have now been secured, ensuring that the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) will receive operational Meteor missiles in time for the KF-21’s official induction into service.

This integration also allows the ROKAF to potentially use shared Meteor missile stocks for both the KF-21 and F-35, enhancing logistical efficiency.
