Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted and destroyed a guided aerial bomb in the Zaporizhzhia region, marking another instance of countering this type of munition. The information was confirmed by Yurii Ihnat, head of communications for the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to Ihnat, guided aerial bombs come in various modifications and warhead configurations. The Russian military launches these weapons from tactical aircraft at a distance, avoiding engagement within Ukraine’s air defense range. However, Ukraine’s Air Force employs multiple strategies to counter these threats effectively.
“For an effective response to this threat, a comprehensive approach is required—combining ground-based air defense systems with an aviation component to push the carriers of guided bombs as far away as possible,” Yurii Ihnat told RBC-Ukraine.
The Air Force has not disclosed the exact method used to intercept the bomb over Zaporizhzhia. However, speculation is already spreading in the media and on Telegram channels about the possible use of experimental weaponry that successfully struck the target in the city’s outskirts. The Air Force also reminded that over the past year alone, Russia has deployed nearly 40,000 of these munitions against Ukraine.
Reports suggesting that experimental weapons may have been used during yesterday’s Russian attack on Zaporizhzhia began circulating this morning. Additionally, Zaporizhzhia regional governor Ivan Fedorov mentioned on his Telegram channel that residents in one of the city’s districts heard an explosion earlier in the day.
Zaporizhzhia has been experiencing frequent attacks from Russian forces in recent weeks. These assaults involve both drones and aerial bombs. According to Ivan Fedorov, who shared the information on his Telegram channel, Russian forces carried out 339 strikes on settlements in the Zaporizhzhia region over the past 24 hours. Among them were two airstrikes targeting the town of Huliaipole.
